A man from Storm Lake, who was arrested on multiple drug-related charges following a pursuit last week, has now been hit with additional charges.

Details of the Incident

On the evening of June 11th, at around 9:45pm, Storm Lake Police initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 700 block of West 8th Street for a minor violation. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Jose Nava Fernandez, was found to be in possession of marijuana after a K9 unit detected the odor of narcotics in the vehicle. Nava Fernandez attempted to flee from officers on foot into a residential area but was ultimately apprehended. During the pursuit, he allegedly discarded a bag containing methamphetamine. An officer sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Initial Charges and Search Warrant

Initially, Nava Fernandez was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine With Intent to Deliver, a class B felony, and Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a class D felony. A search warrant was executed at a residence on Lake Avenue, where two rifles and two handguns were discovered. It was revealed that Nava Fernandez had previous misdemeanor convictions for Domestic Violence in Buena Vista County, making him prohibited from possessing firearms.

Additional Charges

As of Wednesday, Nava Fernandez faces four counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a class D felony. He is currently held in the BV County Jail on a bond of $30,000.
