The victims have been identified as Elle Kim, a 13-year-old girl from Long Grove, Illinois, and Sarina Vootkur, a 16-year-old girl from Lake Forest, California, according to reports from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and CBS News.
An ongoing investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Illinois Conservation Police is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Authorities have revealed that the older girl was operating a Yamaha jet ski on Lake Marie in Antioch, with the 13-year-old as her passenger. The pair was heading north near the channel to Grass Lake when the collision occurred.
At the same time, a 55-year-old man was driving a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser in the same area, traveling westbound, as stated by the sheriff’s office. Eyewitnesses reported that the jet ski was moving at a high speed towards the boat, leaving the man unable to avoid the collision, resulting in the tragic incident.
Following the crash, both occupants of the jet ski, who were wearing life vests, were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water. The four individuals on the Sea Ray immediately sprang into action, pulling the girls from the water, calling emergency services, and providing aid until help arrived.
The victims were swiftly taken to a nearby hospital, where they unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed in the collision. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office extended their deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased.
