In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 26-year-old woman in Malegaon, Nilanga tehsil of central Maharashtra’s Latur district, allegedly took her own life and that of her five-year-old daughter by jumping into a well. The reason behind this tragic incident, as revealed by the police, was the woman’s inability to afford to send her two children to a CBSE-affiliated school due to financial constraints.
The woman, identified as Bhagyashree Venkat Halse, was married to a man who owned one-and-a-half acres of land, with the family’s primary source of income being from herding goats. However, Bhagyashree’s desire to provide her children with a quality education at a CBSE school, which was financially out of reach for the family, reportedly caused her immense distress.
According to family members, Bhagyashree had been struggling with depression, exacerbated by the loss of her mother the previous year. This emotional turmoil ultimately led her to make the devastating decision to end her and her daughter, Samiksha’s, lives.
The tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when Bhagyashree took Samiksha to a well owned by another farmer. Before taking the drastic step, she video called her husband, Venkat Halse, asking him to see their daughter’s face for the last time. Subsequently, Bhagyashree and Samiksha jumped into the well, leading to their untimely deaths.
Fortunately, the woman’s son, who was playing nearby, managed to escape as Bhagyashree had initially attempted to take him along as well. The bodies of Bhagyashree and Samiksha were later recovered by the police with the assistance of local residents.
The Aurad Shahajani police station registered an accidental death report following the tragic incident, with investigations ongoing to understand the circumstances that led to such a devastating outcome.
