According to the Lawrence Police Department, the couple entered the store and left their children in the SUV for approximately 40 minutes. The temperature inside the vehicle reportedly reached a scorching 125 degrees, posing a serious risk to the children’s health and well-being.
It was a passerby who noticed the children inside the locked vehicle and immediately called 911. Responding officers found one of the children sweating profusely, while the other appeared dazed. The exact ages of the children have not been disclosed.
The parents, identified as Mirianne Pierre and Watson Joseph, were promptly arrested and charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent. The children were taken into the custody of the Department of Child Services for their safety and well-being.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Sgt. Anthony Patterson emphasized the dangers of leaving children unattended in hot cars, stating, “The moment we shut that engine off, the temperatures rise really rapidly.” He urged parents to never leave their children alone in a vehicle, especially in extreme heat.
While the Indianapolis police are not leading the investigation, they issued a reminder to parents about the risks of leaving children or pets in unattended vehicles during hot weather. Patrolman Paterson warned that the temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly, creating a life-threatening situation for those inside.
Following the incident, the Indiana State Police in Bloomington also issued a similar warning on their Facebook page, urging parents and pet owners to be vigilant and never leave a child or pet in a hot car, even with the windows cracked. They stressed the importance of checking the entire vehicle before walking away to prevent any accidents or harm.
