Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Authorities in Fremont have named Jonathan Laforteza as the police officer who shot and injured a carjacking suspect over the weekend. Laforteza, who has been with the Fremont Police Department for nearly a year, has two years of experience in law enforcement, according to a news release from the department.

The suspect, a 31-year-old Fremont man, is currently in stable condition following the shooting, which took place in the parking lot of a store in the 44000 block of Osgood Road. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Sunday and the suspect was armed with a knife.

After the carjacking, the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. However, a short time later, Laforteza encountered a person matching the suspect’s description walking on Auto Mall Parkway just west of Osgood Road. The suspect was still armed with the knife.

Despite repeated commands to stop and the officer creating distance, the suspect continued to advance towards Laforteza while brandishing the knife. In response, Laforteza fired his weapon, striking the suspect once. The injured suspect was then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Crimes Against Persons Unit of the police department is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. Any potential criminal charges against the suspect will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.

Individuals who witnessed the shooting or have information pertinent to the case are encouraged to contact Detective Michael Gebhardt at 510-790-6900 or via email at mgebhardt@fremont.gov.
