Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The media advisor for the institution, Hassan Abd Rabbo, has strongly criticised the Israeli authorities for their lack of transparency regarding the condition of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. Abd Rabbo highlighted the fact that information about the deaths of Palestinians in Israeli custody often only comes to light through Israeli media outlets, with organisations like the Red Cross and lawyers being kept in the dark.

Concerns About Deaths in Israeli Prisons

Abd Rabbo pointed to recent reports in the Israeli press, which have highlighted the deaths of approximately thirty Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails in recent months due to mistreatment and inhumane conditions. One such case is that of Dr. Iyad Al-Rantisi, head of the maternity department at Kamal Adwan Hospital, whose death in prison was only made public by the Haaretz newspaper.

Testimonies of Torture and Abuse

Recent testimonies from released Palestinian prisoners have shed light on the horrific conditions they faced while in Israeli custody. Abdel Aziz Dweik, president of the Palestinian Legislative Council, spoke out about the torture he endured during his eight-month imprisonment, describing it as unprecedented. He singled out the Negev prison in southern Israel as particularly notorious for its harsh treatment of inmates.

Other accounts of torture and abuse have also emerged. Samir Abdullah Jamal Marjan, 23, detailed the beatings, electric shocks, and starvation he endured while in Ashkelon prison. Fattah Al-Aklouk recounted the tragic death of a fellow prisoner named Muhammad Al-Kahlot as a result of torture. Additionally, a 65-year-old man, identified only as S, spoke of the torture methods and forced disappearances he witnessed during his time in captivity.

Call for International Attention

The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights has called for international attention to be drawn to the plight of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. They have urged for greater scrutiny of the treatment of detainees and for measures to be taken to ensure their safety and well-being.

In light of these harrowing accounts, it is clear that the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody is a matter of grave concern. The international community must act to ensure that these individuals are treated with dignity and respect, in accordance with international human rights standards.
