Gary Weaver : Man stabs Missouri couple at Nebraska rest stop: NE cops on scene

A man wielding a knife at a rest stop launched a vicious attack on a Missouri couple as they were travelling through Nebraska in their mobile home, authorities have revealed.

Law enforcement officers were called to the scene at a rest area along Interstate 80 at around 7 a.m. on June 19, following reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, they discovered two victims suffering from stab wounds, according to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Department.

Initial investigations suggest that the incident may have originated as an attempted robbery.

Authorities have identified the victims as Gary Weaver, 72, and his wife, aged 71, both hailing from Eureka, Missouri. The couple was rushed to Grand Island Regional Hospital for treatment.

Tragically, Gary Weaver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, while his wife remains in critical condition, as reported by the sheriff’s department.

The sole suspect in the attack has been named as 22-year-old James Thompson Jr. from Elyria, Ohio. Information regarding Thompson’s legal representation was not immediately available.

Following the attack, Thompson fled the scene in a vehicle but was swiftly apprehended by the Nebraska State Patrol. He now faces a slew of charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and robbery, and is currently incarcerated at the Hall County Jail.

The couple, who had been married for 46 years, have left behind devastated family members. Their daughter, speaking to KSDK, described her father as an “amazing father and grandfather.”
