LONDON (CBS) — A devastating apartment fire in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago has resulted in the tragic death of a 7-year-old boy, identified as Adrian M. Matias by the Medical Examiner’s Office. The fire, which also claimed the life of a 24-year-old man and left three others injured, has left the community reeling.

Details of the Incident

The fire broke out in a three-story apartment building located in the 2400 block of East 78th Street in the early hours of Saturday morning. Emergency services responded to the blaze around 2:30 a.m. and discovered the tragic aftermath.

Casualties and Injuries

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found the lifeless body of a 24-year-old man. Four other individuals, including two young boys aged 2 and 7, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the 7-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries and passed away shortly after being admitted to Comer Children’s Hospital. His younger companion, the 2-year-old boy, is currently in stable condition at the same medical facility.

In addition, a 27-year-old man was taken to Trinity Hospital, while a 24-year-old woman received treatment at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Both individuals are reported to be in good condition following the incident.

Tragically, the fire resulted in the displacement of twenty-three individuals who resided in the affected building. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by authorities, as they work to determine the events leading up to this devastating incident.
