A purported spiritual leader in Singapore, Woo May Hoe, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 10 years and six months for defrauding her followers of more than S$7 million and subjecting them to horrific punishments, including eating human faeces.

Woo, who claimed to be a deity and had approximately 30 followers, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and two charges of cheating in May. The court considered 45 other charges during the sentencing.

The 54-year-old Singaporean led a group that believed in spiritual leader Sri Sakthi Narayani Amma, although details about Amma were not provided in court documents. Woo convinced her followers to donate money to Amma’s society in India, but instead, she kept the funds for herself from 2012 to 2020.

Exploitation and Abuse of Followers

In court proceedings, it was revealed that many of Woo’s followers or their relatives were suffering from serious medical conditions. Woo manipulated them into believing that they needed to clear their “bad karma” and increase their “good karma” by making payments to Amma’s society in India.

She also coerced her followers into buying properties and cars for her under the guise of performing acts of “worship” to improve their health and well-being. Additionally, about a third of her followers were forced to live with her full-time and cater to her every need.

Abusive Practices

Deputy Public Prosecutor Grace Chua described the abusive behaviour of Woo towards her followers, which included physically assaulting them with objects like paint brushes and canes, as well as inflicting severe punishments such as forcing them to consume human faeces and jump from heights.

One victim, identified as V2, suffered long-term consequences after Woo repeatedly struck her with canes, leading to eye injuries that require lifelong follow-ups for possible glaucoma. V2 was also ordered to jump from a building, resulting in fractures to both ankles.

Arrest and Mental Health Evaluation

Woo’s reign of abuse came to an end in 2020 when some of her followers reported her to the police. It was later revealed that Woo was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the offences.

However, an Institute of Mental Health doctor found no direct link between Woo’s mental state and her fraudulent activities. Despite her mental health condition, Woo was still held accountable for her crimes.

The sentencing of Woo May Hoe serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of manipulation and exploitation by individuals posing as spiritual leaders. It also highlights the importance of seeking proper medical and legal help in cases of abuse and fraud within religious or spiritual groups.
