Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office has reported a significant increase in drug seizures in the county, with recent operations yielding substantial quantities of illegal substances. Deputy Wesley Doss, a K9 handler with the Guadalupe County Narcotics Taskforce, and his canine partner Bruno recently made a major bust on a highway, confiscating over 10 kilograms of methamphetamine valued at more than $47,000.

Highway Drug Interdiction

Bruno, a 10-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd, is trained to detect narcotics with incredible accuracy. Deputy Doss emphasised the superior olfactory senses of police canines, stating that their sense of smell is approximately 50,000 times stronger than that of humans. The duo primarily focuses their efforts on intercepting drug trafficking activities along major highways such as I-10 and 130.

Increased Drug Activity on I-10

Deputy Doss highlighted I-10 as a major drug trafficking route, witnessing a surge in the transportation of illicit substances such as fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin. A recent traffic stop at the 613-mile marker of IH-10 West led to the discovery of methamphetamine in the possession of a 41-year-old man recently released from federal prison.

During the traffic stop, the suspect exhibited nervous behaviour, prompting further investigation. With assistance from the DEA and the San Antonio Police Department, the man, identified as Daniel Romanowski, was taken into federal custody for drug trafficking offences.

Successful Operations and Confiscations

Deputy Doss expressed satisfaction with the outcome of their operations, attributing their success to rigorous training and the bond between him and his K9 partner. While acknowledging that not all attempts are successful, he underscored the importance of their work in combating drug trafficking in the region.

In a statement to KENS 5, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office provided data on drug seizures conducted by the Narcotics Division in the past year. The top three drugs confiscated were:

  • Methamphetamine: 86,150.04 grams
  • Cocaine / Crack: 21,772.48 grams
  • Marijuana: 25,886 grams

The significant quantities of drugs seized underscore the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and protect the community from the harmful effects of illicit substances.
