In a heart-wrenching incident that took place on Tuesday afternoon in Bhubaneswar, a 10-year-old boy named S K Rajesh lost his life after being swept away in an open drain at Masjid Colony in the Unit III area. The incident occurred following heavy rainfall that lashed the city around 2 pm.
According to sources, Rajesh was playing with other children near the drain in Masjid Colony when he spotted a balloon floating in the water. In an attempt to retrieve the balloon, he stepped into the drain and was swiftly carried away by the strong current of stormwater.
Upon hearing about the incident, local residents and authorities sprang into action to rescue the young boy. Fire services personnel were promptly summoned to the scene, with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Mayor Sulochana Das also arriving to oversee the rescue efforts.
After a frantic search, Rajesh was eventually located in a drain in the Laxmisagar area and rushed to Capital Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the devastating loss, family members and community members expressed outrage over the uncovered drain, holding it responsible for the tragic accident. They lamented that had the drain been properly covered, Rajesh’s life could have been spared.
Deeply saddened by the incident, revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari extended his condolences to the bereaved family and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to assist them during this difficult time.
