The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently looking into an officer-involved shooting that took place on Tuesday at the Gas Pro Travel Center on 301 South in Statesboro. The incident unfolded after several reports were made regarding a black Chevrolet Camaro allegedly involved in a hit-and-run, reckless driving, and firing of shots. Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate the vehicle and the suspect parked at a gas pump at the Gas Pro.

According to officials, the suspect had fired shots at another patron at the gas station before turning his weapon on the responding deputies. In response, the deputies returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect, later identified as Robert Allen Bostic, was pronounced dead at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center. His body will be transferred to the GBI Crime Lab for further investigation.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Georgia State Patrol, Statesboro Police Department, Georgia Southern University Police Department, Bulloch County EMS, and Georgia Department of Transportation, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office released a statement detailing the sequence of events leading up to the tragic incident. It was reported that on June 18th, at approximately 2:45 PM, the Sheriff’s Office received a call about a motor vehicle accident near Highway 80E and Burkhalter. The vehicle involved in the accident fled the scene, prompting deputies to search for it.

Subsequent reports indicated that gunshots were fired from a vehicle matching the description of the hit-and-run suspect. The suspect then drove to the Gas Pro Travel Center on Highway 301 South, where he allegedly opened fire on a customer at the gas station. Deputies arrived at the scene and attempted to approach the suspect, who then fired at one of the deputies. In response, both deputies discharged their weapons, resulting in the fatal shooting of Bostic.

Sheriff Brown commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by his deputies during the incident. He also expressed gratitude towards the swift response of the Georgia State Patrol and the other assisting agencies. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

The investigation has now been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and anyone with information related to the case is urged to come forward.

The deceased individual, identified as Robert Allen Bostic, 25, from Warner Robins, Georgia, was fatally shot during the altercation. None of the officers involved sustained any injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest that on June 18, 2024, multiple calls were made to Bulloch County Dispatch regarding a black Chevrolet Camaro engaged in various criminal activities. Deputies eventually located the suspect’s vehicle at the Gas Pro Travel Center, where Bostic allegedly discharged his firearm at a patron before turning it on the responding officers. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, Bostic continued to pose a threat, leading to the use of deadly force by law enforcement.

Following the shooting, Bostic was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The GBI will oversee an independent investigation into the incident, and the findings will be forwarded to the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for assessment.
