Accident – Death – Obituary News :

During a recent week of action (3-7 June), the Roads Policing Unit of Avon and Somerset Police took a stand against dangerous driving behaviour by targeting what are known as the Fatal Five offences. In addition to enforcement activities, the police force also organised community engagement events to raise awareness of road safety issues.

What are the Fatal Five offences?

The Fatal Five offences are the five most common factors that contribute to fatal and serious injury collisions on UK roads. These include:

As part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s 2Wheel campaign, which ran from 3 to 16 June, the Avon and Somerset Police focused on motorcycle-related crimes in response to reports of dangerous driving behaviour by motorcycle delivery riders in Bristol. During the enforcement activities, a 16-year-old boy was arrested for riding a stolen motorcycle recklessly through a red light without a helmet and proper registration.

Several delivery riders were also stopped and checked for insurance and documentation compliance, resulting in the seizure of a motorcycle due to expired documentation and driving without a license. Additionally, other drivers were issued Traffic Offence Reports for various violations, including driving without due care, using mobile phones while driving, and operating vehicles in dangerous conditions.

Engagement with the Community

Alongside enforcement efforts, the Avon and Somerset Police’s Road Safety Team engaged with the community at events like Weston Bike Night and a staff event at the Airbus facility in Filton. These events provided an opportunity to inform motorcyclists about Raise Your Ride, a development programme aimed at enhancing rider skills and safety on the roads. The courses are led by serving or ex-Police Advanced Riders and more information can be found at www.raiseyourride.co.uk.

Additionally, the Community SpeedWatch programme conducted operations during the week, resulting in the issuance of 668 educational warning letters to drivers after 102 sessions.

Message from Superintendent Oliver Cosgrove

Superintendent Oliver Cosgrove emphasised the importance of road safety, stating, “We are witnessing a concerning number of fatal and serious injury collisions that could have been prevented. Whether it’s not wearing a seatbelt, driving under the influence, or any of the Fatal Five offences, these behaviours put lives at risk.”

He encouraged the public to report individuals who engage in dangerous driving behaviours anonymously through Crimestoppers. Superintendent Cosgrove highlighted the role of community-submitted intelligence in targeting illegal and dangerous driving on the roads.
