Biologists stumbled upon this unusual find while conducting research in the Valparai Plateau, located in the southwestern region of the country, at an altitude of nearly 4,600 feet above sea level.
After subjecting the creature to DNA analysis, scientists confirmed that it belongs to a previously unknown species of gecko, now officially named the ‘Valparai dwarf gecko’. This particular species is predominantly found in boulder habitats within the evergreen forests of Tenkasi, a region renowned for its spiritual and cultural significance in India.
Interestingly, further exploration led the research team to discover four additional species of geckos, all originating from a common ancestor but each occupying distinct microhabitats within the tropical evergreen forests of India. This phenomenon, known as ‘extreme micro-endemism’, highlights the remarkable ability of species to adapt and thrive in specific niche environments.
The Valparai dwarf gecko, despite being classified as large within its lizard family, measures only around 4.5 inches in length. A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Zootaxa shed light on the distinctive features of this new species, such as its red eyes, unique scale pattern, and elongated fingers on its claws.
Moreover, genetic analysis revealed that the Valparai dwarf gecko exhibits more than an eight percent difference in DNA compared to other dwarf gecko species. This genetic divergence, coupled with physical characteristics, solidifies its status as a distinct and separate species within the gecko family.
The research team also observed a remarkable variation in colouration among the Valparai dwarf gecko specimens, with males displaying dark ‘black and white’ regions on their tails and bright yellow spots on their bodies. In contrast, the female specimen appeared darker with less prominent yellow colouration and an orange-brown tail.
Collaborating with the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation and Shivaji University in India, the researchers identified four additional closely related dwarf gecko species – the Agamalai dwarf gecko, Anaimalai dwarf gecko, Anuradha’s dwarf gecko, and the Tenkasi dwarf gecko. Each of these species exhibited a genetic divergence ranging from 2.3 to 5.4 percent, highlighting their unique evolutionary paths.
