Accident – Death – Obituary News : A longstanding mystery in Southern California has finally been solved, as authorities have identified a woman whose remains were discovered nearly 41 years ago. The remains, which were found in 1983 in what is now Lake Forest, Calif., have been positively identified as Maritza Glean Grimmett by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
According to a recent news release from the sheriff’s department, Grimmett, who was previously known as a “Jane Doe,” was a native of Panama and was just 20 years old when she disappeared. After marrying a U.S. Marine in the summer of 1978 and giving birth to a daughter that same year, Grimmett moved to the United States. However, she was last heard from in July 1979 after informing her sister that she was heading to California following a divorce from her husband.
Tragically, Grimmett’s family never heard from her again, leaving them with unanswered questions for decades. When Grimmett’s skull was discovered by children playing in the area, investigators uncovered approximately 70% of her remains. An anthropology examination revealed that Grimmett was a Black or bi-racial woman between the ages of 18 and 24, standing between 5 feet, 3 inches to 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with a distinctive gold tooth.
Despite numerous efforts, investigators were unable to definitively identify Grimmett, leaving her identity shrouded in mystery. However, in 2022, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department turned to forensic genetic genealogy to assist in the investigation. By submitting a DNA sample from Grimmett to Othram Laboratories, a genetic genealogy company, investigators were able to make significant progress. Collaborating with the FBI’s Regional Genealogy Team, they eventually traced a direct family line for Grimmett in late 2023.
After sharing the findings with a Facebook group focused on missing women from the 1970s and 1980s, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by a woman who believed the body discovered in 1983 was her missing mother. This breakthrough has provided some closure to Grimmett’s family and may shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Bob Taft, an investigator with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, emphasized the importance of continuing the search for answers in cases involving missing persons. He acknowledged that true closure may never be fully achieved for families grappling with such losses.
The identification of Grimmett marks the 39th case in California where advanced technology has been used to publicly identify an individual. This advancement in technology has been pivotal in resolving cold cases across the country, such as the recent identification of David Walker from the USS California, who was presumed dead following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
In Oregon, authorities were able to identify Sandra Young, whose remains were discovered in a shallow grave over half a century ago. While progress has been made in solving these cases, there are still many unanswered questions surrounding these individuals’ deaths. The ongoing investigations serve as a reminder of the importance of seeking justice and closure for the families of missing persons..
