Las Vegas (KLAS) — The mystery surrounding the body found concealed in a barrel at Lake Mead over two years ago continues to baffle investigators. Despite exhaustive efforts, the victim remains unidentified. Now, authorities are turning to the clothing and shoes worn by the victim in hopes of finally solving the case.
The grim discovery was made on May 1, 2022, when boaters stumbled upon the man’s body concealed in a barrel near Hemenway Harbor. County officials determined that the man had died from a gunshot wound, ruling his death a homicide. The initial report of the finding was first covered by Nexstar’s KLAS.
Las Vegas Metro police suspect that the man met his demise in the 1980s based on personal items found in the barrel. The victim was dressed in clothing and shoes that were typical of the mid-to-late 1970s, with items that were commonly sold at Kmart stores during that period.
The man was dressed in a 2X Idletime button-down short-sleeve shirt and jeans featuring a Vidal Sasson-style design on the pocket. The jeans had a 46-inch waist and were 30 inches long. Additionally, the victim was wearing size 11 Trax tennis shoes and a silver Timex digital watch.
Last year, Clark County officials released a digital composite image of the man, hoping that it would lead to a breakthrough in the case.
Homicide detectives have reached out to multiple families to obtain DNA samples to aid in identifying the victim. These families were selected from various unsolved missing persons cases from the same era.
Despite ongoing efforts, there is no set timeline for when the remains might be positively identified. The coroner’s office is collaborating with an external agency to conduct DNA testing, as confirmed by Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse.
While DNA can be extracted from bone samples, the condition of the remains is a crucial factor in the identification process, as explained by the Clark County coroner.
The coroner’s office has successfully identified three other sets of remains that were discovered following the initial finding of the barrel.
