Suspect’s Attempt to Flee Authorities

A patrol officer from Auburn Hills reported witnessing a red 2020 Kia Forte travelling at high speeds southbound on Lapeer Road around 7 p.m. on June 6, 2024. Carroll has since been identified as the driver of the vehicle.

The officer activated his emergency lights in an attempt to pull over the Kia just north of Lapeer West Road, but Carroll accelerated and proceeded to elude the police, according to official reports.

During the pursuit, the Kia reached speeds of up to 88 mph, prompting the officer to terminate the chase at Zelma Drive, approximately half a mile from the initial stop.

Continuing south on Lapeer Road and cresting a small hill towards Walton Boulevard, the Kia eventually met with tragedy.

After turning off his emergency lights, the officer observed smoke emanating from the intersection of Walton Boulevard and Perry Street.

Collision at the Intersection

Upon arriving at the intersection of Walton Boulevard and Perry Street, the officer discovered that the Kia had collided with a tan 2022 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Carroll fled the scene on foot, according to police statements.

Injuries Sustained

A female passenger in the Kia was left in critical condition as a result of the collision.

The 68-year-old male driver of the F-150 was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by firefighters. He also sustained critical injuries.

Both individuals were rushed to nearby medical facilities.

Tragically, the 68-year-old man succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by authorities.

The female passenger remains in critical condition, though her condition is now stable.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Following the collision, Auburn Hills officers along with K-9 units from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive search for Carroll. However, he managed to evade immediate capture.

The subsequent day, at approximately 5 p.m. on June 7, a concerned citizen contacted emergency services to report an individual lying in a wooded area around half a mile from the crash site.

Law enforcement responded and apprehended Carroll. He was subsequently taken into custody and lodged in the Oakland County Jail.
