A student from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Energy University (PDEU) in Gujarat has recently been charged with cheating a 72-year-old woman in the United States out of $40,000. This incident is part of a larger trend where six individuals from Gujarat have been arrested in the US for similar fraudulent activities targeting senior citizens.
Gold Fraud Cases Targeting Elderly Victims
According to US security agencies, the six Gujaratis involved in these scams, including the PDEU student, posed as US agency officers to manipulate elderly individuals into converting their savings into gold assets or handing over their money for “safekeeping”. The victims were coerced by threats of legal trouble if they did not comply.
Details of the Case
The accused student, Jainav Patel, who was studying under a student exchange program at Southern Illinois University, allegedly contacted the elderly woman in Illinois, claiming to be a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) officer. Along with another individual, Alonzo Waheed Jr, they convinced the woman that her accounts were compromised and persuaded her to withdraw over $40,000 for “safekeeping”.
Fortunately, the woman’s relative intervened upon hearing about the scam and alerted the authorities. The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Jainav and Alonzo when they arrived to collect the cash from the victim’s residence.
Legal Proceedings and Defense
Jainav Patel, in his defense, stated that his case is on the verge of dismissal due to a lack of evidence. He claimed that the situation arose from a misunderstanding and misleading information. However, as per the sheriff’s office, Jainav and Alonzo were charged with conspiracy to commit false pretenses involving amounts between $20,000 and $50,000.
These recent incidents highlight the importance of vigilance and awareness, especially among vulnerable populations such as senior citizens, to protect themselves from falling victim to financial scams and fraud.
