The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a call regarding an assault involving a knife at around 8:15 p.m. on Monday in the 700 block of West 28th Street. According to an official statement from the LAPD, “The male victim was caught breaking into vehicles when the suspect confronted and fatally stabbed him.”
Interim LAPD Chief Dominic Choi shed light on the situation, revealing that Gallegos witnessed the homeless man attempting to break into his car in the rear parking lot of the fraternity house. In self-defence, Gallegos claimed that the man threatened to have a gun, prompting him to use a knife in response.
Reports from the Los Angeles Times indicate that no firearm was recovered from the scene of the crime. The identity of the homeless man who lost his life in the incident has not yet been disclosed.
Gallegos, a resident of Los Angeles, cooperated with authorities and was apprehended without resistance. He has been formally charged with suspicion of murder and is being held on a bail amount of $2 million.
