Accident – Death – Obituary News : **HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Shocking revelations have emerged following the closure of Lake Academy in Tampa by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. After the tragic death of a young girl at the facility last month, the department terminated its contract with the company operating Lake Academy.**

A spokesperson for the D.J.J. disclosed in an email statement to the I-Team on Tuesday that the decision to end the contract was made even before investigations into the girl’s death were concluded. The closure has sparked further scrutiny as two former teachers have come forward with harrowing accounts of their time at Lake Academy.

Heather Cleveland, a dedicated math teacher from Hillsborough County Public Schools, shared her distressing experience of working at Lake Academy. Reflecting on her time at the facility, she revealed, “You never enter campus and look at razor wire and are not reminded of where we are and the magnitude of your job in a day.” Cleveland recounted being promised safety and protection when she took on the role, only to be attacked by a student just three months into her tenure.

Describing the chaotic environment at Lake Academy, Cleveland voiced concerns about the lack of order and discipline within the facility. She pointed fingers at TrueCore Behavioral Solutions, LLC, the private contractor responsible for operating Lake Academy, for failing to maintain a conducive learning environment. Cleveland emphasized that as a teacher, her primary focus should have been on instructional delivery, not on managing disruptive behavior.

Another former teacher, who chose to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution, spoke out about the appalling conditions at Lake Academy. Recounting instances of staff members neglecting their duties, including allowing students to engage in inappropriate behavior, the teacher highlighted a disturbing lack of supervision and discipline.

The teachers’ testimonies shed light on the alarming state of affairs at Lake Academy, prompting questions about the oversight and accountability of private contractors in the juvenile justice system. TrueCore Behavioral Solutions, LLC, had been awarded a lucrative five-year $31.5 million contract to operate the facility, raising concerns about the allocation of taxpayer funds.

Furthermore, records revealed a troubling pattern of incidents at Lake Academy, with an average of more than five law enforcement responses per month. With 195 calls to 9-1-1 in three years, including cases of assault, battery, and redacted reports indicating serious offenses, the safety and well-being of students and staff were called into question.

Both teachers cited their traumatic experiences, which culminated in violent attacks by students, as the primary reasons for leaving Lake Academy. Despite enduring physical and emotional harm, they were compelled to speak out following the tragic death of a 17-year-old student. The incident has prompted investigations by the DJJ inspector general and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, with girls from Lake Academy being relocated to other facilities.

Despite attempts to reach out to TrueCore Behavioral Solutions, LLC for comment on the allegations and incidents at Lake Academy, the company remained unresponsive. The disturbing revelations from former teachers and the tragic loss of a young life have underscored the urgent need for accountability and reform in the juvenile justice system.
