Police facing increase in attacks and obstruction

Law enforcement agencies have reported a surge in acts of obstruction and violent attacks on police officers, leading to the closure of several police posts in upcountry areas.

The police have highlighted a rise in acts of impunity and lawlessness from the public, resulting in numerous officers being hospitalized.

Speaking to the media, police spokesperson Fred Enanga outlined incidents such as attacks on police posts, resistance during arrests, and mob justice against officers as examples of the public’s disregard for the law.

In response to these challenges, the police have apprehended eight suspects for the attempted murder of a policeman and the Parish Intelligence Officer.

In a recent incident in Kamuli district, officers Godfrey Obongi and Mulani Ngobi ran out of fuel on their patrol motorcycle while responding to a call at Bugade Health Centre III.

The officers then pushed the motorcycle to the residence of Peter Mukalakasa, the LC I chairman of Busobya village, for safekeeping during the night.

However, when Ngobi returned the next day to retrieve the motorcycle, a mob led by the chairman accused him of theft, leading to an altercation.

Obongi and another officer, Charles Mudiro, intervened to assist Ngobi but were met with violence from the mob.

Despite the challenges, the police managed to rescue the officers and arrested eight suspects for attempted murder.

In Paidha District, police are currently guarding a suspect who sustained a bullet wound while attempting to disarm an officer during an escape attempt.

The suspect, known only as Derrick, orchestrated a group of individuals to confront armed officers at the police station, resulting in a scuffle.

During the altercation, the suspect was shot in the thigh, and both he and the injured officers are receiving medical treatment.

Similarly, in Kole District, a police post was forced to shut down following an attack by residents of Parabok village.

The villagers refused to allow suspected phone thieves to be detained, leading to a confrontation with the officers which resulted in injuries.

Tragically, a stray bullet fired by the police fatally wounded a 53-year-old man named Stephen Obua in the same village, prompting the closure of the police post.

Meanwhile, in Otuke District, authorities are searching for a former convict named Ochan who stabbed officer Alfred Awuye in an attempt to steal his firearm.

Despite being stabbed twice with a spear, Officer Awuye managed to retain his weapon after a fierce struggle with the suspect.

Enanga has appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and refrain from resorting to violence.

“In response to these acts of impunity, we have decided to close the police post in Kole. The police are here to uphold the law and should not be met with hostility. Bringing a suspect to the police does not give individuals the right to dictate how they should be treated,” Enanga emphasised.
