Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a solemn gathering, the community of Charles City County, Virginia, united on Wednesday to pay tribute to the late Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Floyd H. Miles Jr. The memorial service was held at Charles City High School, where residents, colleagues, and loved ones gathered to honour his memory.

The untimely passing of Miles, aged 45, sent shockwaves through the community after he suffered a medical emergency while on duty earlier this month. The tragic incident occurred as Miles was monitoring traffic on John Tyler Memorial Highway at Wayside Drive, a routine task that took a devastating turn.

According to Charles City County Sheriff Jayson T. Crawley, a moped driver approached Miles’ cruiser, leading to an unexpected chain of events. The driver’s moped fell onto the cruiser as he neared it, prompting Miles to notice blood on the driver and inquire about his well-being.

During the interaction, the driver claimed that people were after him and attempting to harm him, a statement that raised concerns for Miles. In an act of compassion and duty, Miles placed the driver in the rear of his vehicle and called for emergency medical services for further assessment.

When EMS personnel arrived on the scene, they moved the moped driver to the back of an ambulance for evaluation. However, the situation took a violent turn as the driver became combative and launched an attack on Miles, initiating a struggle involving EMS crews and law enforcement members.

As the altercation unfolded, Miles suffered a sudden medical emergency, prompting his urgent transfer to VCU Health’s Emergency Center at New Kent. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Miles succumbed to his condition, leaving behind a community in mourning.

Meanwhile, the moped driver, identified as 60-year-old Derek Croom from Portsmouth, faced legal consequences for his actions. Croom was charged with felonious assault of a law enforcement officer, destruction of Charles City County property, and obstruction of justice, highlighting the severity of the incident.

Miles Jr. is survived by his parents, wife, three stepsons, a grandson, brothers, and a sister, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew and respected him. His legacy as a dedicated law enforcement officer and a pillar of the community will endure, cherished by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.

As the community grapples with this profound loss, the memory of Sgt. Floyd H. Miles Jr. will remain etched in their hearts, a reminder of his selfless service and unwavering commitment to duty.
