LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — More than two years have passed since a body was discovered hidden in a barrel at Lake Mead, outside Las Vegas. Despite extensive efforts, investigators have been unable to identify the victim. Now, authorities are turning to the clothes and shoes worn by the victim in hopes of shedding light on his identity.

The grim discovery was made on May 1, 2022, when boaters stumbled upon the man’s body concealed in a barrel near Hemenway Harbor. County officials determined that the man had died from a gunshot wound, ruling his death a homicide. The initial report of the finding was first broken by Nexstar’s KLAS.

Clothing Clues Point to the 1980s

Las Vegas Metro police suspect that the man met his tragic end in the 1980s, based on personal items found in the barrel. Investigators revealed that the victim was wearing clothing and shoes commonly sold at Kmart stores in the mid-to-late 1970s, providing a potential timeframe for his demise.

The man was dressed in a 2X Idletime button-down short-sleeve shirt and jeans featuring a Vidal Sasson-style design on the pocket. The jeans were notably size 46 in waist and 30 inches in length. Additionally, he was wearing size 11 Trax tennis shoes and a silver Timex digital watch.

Continued Efforts for Identification

Last year, Clark County officials released a digital composite image of what they believe the man may have looked like, in a bid to generate leads and potentially identify the victim. Homicide detectives have also sought DNA samples from multiple families to assist in resolving the case. Families were selected from various unsolved missing persons cases from that era.

The identification process involves testing for DNA, which is conducted by an external agency in collaboration with the coroner’s office. Despite ongoing efforts, there is no set timeline for when the remains may be positively identified.

Authorities encourage anyone with information that may aid in identifying the victim to come forward.
