A dramatic manhunt in New York City came to a close on Tuesday when 23-year-old Angela Sauretti spotted a man in a black hoodie entering the 108th Street Grocery in Queens at 1 a.m.
Sauretti was convinced that she had seen this man’s face on an NYPD wanted poster on Instagram. The poster identified him as a suspect in the machete-point rape of a 13-year-old girl who was walking with a boy her age last week.
She immediately called out to a friend who had also seen the police Instagram post. Together, they confirmed that the man in the hoodie was indeed the suspect that over 60 detectives had been searching for since the brazen daylight attack in a park opposite the victim’s junior high school.
Without hesitation, Sauretti confronted the man in the hoodie and managed to detain him.
Despite his attempts to escape, Sauretti was able to subdue him and deliver her own form of street justice. She made it clear to him that his actions against a woman had consequences, and she was not going to let him get away with it.
As the man continued to resist, Sauretti’s determination only grew stronger. She was joined by others, including 67-year-old Isabel Caizado, who also took action against the suspect.
Eventually, the man was identified as 25-year-old Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador. He had crossed the southern border at Eagle Pass, Texas in 2021.
Following his arrest, Sauretti spoke to detectives and later learned that their actions had resulted in a citizen’s arrest. Despite the $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the accused rapist, Sauretti maintained that her decision to act was driven by a sense of duty and justice.
Reflecting on the events, Sauretti expressed a sense of pride in her actions, noting that she had faced challenges in the past that had helped shape her character. She remained humble about her role in the manhunt, highlighting that her broken wristwatch was a minor concern compared to the importance of bringing the suspect to justice.
