Accident – Death – Obituary News : In a tragic incident in Bhubaneswar, a six-year-old boy named Abu Bakkar Saha was swept away by rainwater in an open drain while playing near his house in the Unit-III area of the city on Tuesday afternoon. Abu, the son of Humati Saha, a scrap collector, was playing with a balloon near drain no. 5 when storm water from upstream suddenly swept him away at around 3 pm. Despite the efforts of locals who immediately jumped into the drain to search for him, Abu could not be located. It was only later that his lifeless body was recovered by fire services personnel.

Manoranjan Rout, assistant fire officer (AFO), who led the operation, described the challenging conditions in the drain, which was 8 feet wide and 10 feet high with knee-deep water flowing through it. After an extensive search, Abu was found floating in the water near the intersection of two drains in the Laxmisagar area, approximately 4 kilometres from where he was swept away.

The unfortunate incident has prompted Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to offer his condolences to the bereaved family and announce an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund. Abu, who leaves behind an elder brother and a younger sister, will be remembered by the community as investigations are launched to determine the circumstances that led to his tragic demise.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation deputy commissioner (sanitation), Manoranjan Sahu, highlighted the presence of safety measures around the drain openings, including nets installed by the works department. However, it is suspected that locals may have tampered with these safety precautions, leading to the devastating incident.

Mayor Sulochana Das visited the scene and the hospital where Abu’s body was taken, expressing concern over the proximity of the drain to railway tracks and another nearby waterway. She emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify any lapses in safety measures and prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

The community mourns the loss of young Abu Bakkar Saha and calls for increased vigilance and safety measures to protect children playing near open drains. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety of public spaces to prevent such heartbreaking accidents..
