Bhubaneswar: A tragic incident unfolded in Masjeed Colony, Unit-III area of Bhubaneswar, as a six-year-old boy named Abu Bakar Saha lost his life after being swept away in an open drain on Tuesday. The young child was playing outside his home during the rainy weather when he fell into the drain and was tragically declared dead by medical professionals.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred when Abu Bakar attempted to retrieve a drifting balloon from the rainwater flowing in the open drain. Despite efforts from family members, neighbours, and fire officials, the boy’s body was only recovered after an hour-long search in a nullah at Laxmi Sagar.
Abu Bakar was swiftly taken to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where doctors confirmed his passing. Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das has since announced a compensation of £4,000 for the grieving family of the young victim.
In response to the tragedy, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra visited the Unit-III Maszid Colony to assess the circumstances surrounding the boy’s tragic fate. Expressing deep concern over the incident, the Minister has directed the Bhubaneswar Municipal Commissioner (BMC) to provide a detailed report on why the open drain was not properly secured. The BMC commissioner has been instructed to submit the report by Wednesday evening.
Minister Mohapatra also met with the bereaved family members and assured them of taking stringent action against those responsible for the mishap. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed his condolences over the young boy’s untimely demise and has announced an ex-gratia payment of £4,000 to the deceased’s next of kin from the State Disaster Response Fund.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has also conveyed his deep sorrow over the tragic incident, highlighting the need for increased safety measures in the community to prevent such heartbreaking events from reoccurring.
