DETROIT (FOX 2) – A 29-year-old Detroit man, Zaughn Coleman, is facing second-degree murder charges following a tragic fatal crash in the city over the weekend.

Zaughn Coleman, 29, being arraigned on second-degree murder after a fatal crash in Detroit over the weekend.

Prior to the tragic incident, Coleman had accumulated numerous speeding and traffic violations despite driving with a suspended license, according to prosecutors who presented the case during his initial court appearance on Tuesday.

Coleman, who appeared in court from a hospital bed due to multiple injuries, including a broken leg, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The judge deemed him a danger to the community and set a bond of $500,000.

“He’s an extreme danger to society,” assistant prosecutor Anna Merigian emphasized during the virtual hearing.

The prosecutor’s office revealed that Coleman was engaged in reckless driving behavior on Seven Mile Road around 10:30 p.m. on June 14, performing dangerous maneuvers before colliding with another vehicle. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Quintell Ray of Detroit, was fatally injured in the crash.

Both Coleman and Ray were transported to a nearby hospital, where Ray tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Coleman sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures in his left leg, requiring several surgeries, his defense attorney disclosed during the arraignment. Despite his injuries, the defense argued for a personal bond, citing his prolonged hospitalization.

The defense attorney also raised concerns about the lack of privacy for his client, stating that police presence during their interactions hindered their communication.

“The community is safe with him in the hospital,” the defense attorney asserted.

However, the judge remained unconvinced and scheduled a bond review for later in the week to reassess the $500,000 bond amount.

In addition to the second-degree murder charge, Coleman faces additional charges of reckless driving causing death and operating a vehicle with a suspended license resulting in death.
