In recent weeks, the Eagle Police Department in Idaho has been inundated with reports of individuals riding electronic dirt bikes (e-bikes) in a dangerous and reckless manner. These riders have been seen speeding on sidewalks, streets, and even through Guerber Park during soccer matches.
One incident involved a daring escape attempt by a rider who boldly told a police officer that he couldn’t catch him before speeding off. This brazen behaviour has raised concerns among law enforcement officials and the local community.
Arrest Made After High-Speed Chase
On June 6, a deputy on patrol at the Eagle Sports Complex encountered two e-bike riders matching the descriptions provided in previous reports. When the deputies tried to approach them, the riders split up and fled in different directions.
After a pursuit, one of the riders, a 15-year-old boy without a driver’s license, was apprehended as he attempted to flee towards Horseshoe Bend at speeds exceeding 10-30 mph over the posted limits. He was taken into custody and booked into the Ada County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of felony fleeing and eluding.
The e-bike in question was identified as a Talaria Sting MX3, known for its capability to reach speeds of up to 65 mph, making it a significant safety hazard on the road.
Drone Tracking Leads to Second Rider
Meanwhile, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office deployed drone operators to track the second rider who was evading police through Dry Creek Cemetery. Despite the deputies halting their pursuit, the rider continued to drive recklessly, even crossing lanes on Highway 55 and driving into oncoming traffic at high speeds.
Subsequent investigations revealed that this rider was also a 15-year-old boy, and his charges have been forwarded to the Ada County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office for review.
These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless e-bike riders and the importance of enforcing road safety regulations to protect both riders and the general public.
