FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 20-year-old man has been taken into custody after a reckless joy ride in Fresno, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has reported that the individual, identified as Oscar Duarte of Fresno, was released following the incident.

High-speed pursuit

The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on June 8 when a deputy attempted to stop a red Mercedes Benz travelling at a dangerously high speed in the vicinity of Highway 41 and Jensen Avenue in Fresno. Despite the deputy’s efforts to pull him over, Duarte refused to comply and fled the scene, engaging in multiple unsafe lane changes.

After a pursuit lasting approximately two minutes, the deputy discontinued the chase, and the California Highway Patrol’s aerial unit, AIR 43, took over the monitoring of the suspect’s movements.

Reckless driving

Throughout the pursuit, Duarte displayed reckless behaviour, running red lights, and overtaking other vehicles on the shoulder and median in an attempt to evade capture. He navigated various routes at speeds ranging from 90 mph to 100 mph before finally exiting Belmont Avenue from Highway 99 at around 8:45 p.m.

Upon exiting the highway, Duarte found himself surrounded by deputies and CHP units, who instructed him to exit the vehicle. The driver complied with the authorities’ orders and was subsequently apprehended.

Motivation behind the reckless behaviour

Following his arrest, Duarte confessed to law enforcement officers that he had been inspired to engage in the dangerous behaviour after watching similar videos online. He claimed to have witnessed other drivers partake in high-speed pursuits and believed it would be entertaining to replicate their actions.

Legal consequences

Despite managing to evade collisions with other vehicles during the incident, Duarte was taken into custody. He has since been released pending a future court date to address the charges brought against him by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
