EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) – The Evansville Police Department in Indiana made two arrests following a heartbreaking incident that resulted in the death of a 4-year-old girl named Octavia Aquino. The child was found unresponsive, and despite efforts to save her, she tragically passed away on Sunday.
The mother of the little girl, 23-year-old Destiny Rhoades, initially faced a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. However, this charge has since been upgraded to neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a level 1 felony.
Additionally, Rhoades’ 16-year-old boyfriend, Christian Gonzalez, was also arrested in connection with the incident. Initially charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, his charge has now been changed to murder. Gonzalez appeared in juvenile court before being waived to adult court and is currently being held at the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center.
Authorities are currently awaiting the results of an autopsy conducted on Octavia to determine the exact cause of her death. The tragic news has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a young life.
In a heartbreaking interview with WFIE, Octavia’s grandmother, Linda Alvarez, expressed her devastation at the loss of her beloved granddaughter. She described Octavia as a happy, smiling, and spirited little girl who brought joy to everyone she met.
Police revealed that two other adults reside in the apartment where the incident took place. One of them reportedly noticed bruises and a possible bite mark on Octavia while she was in Rhoades’ care the night before her passing.
