MESA, Ariz. (AZFamily/Gray News) — A woman is facing a felony charge in Mesa, Arizona after police reported that she left her 4-year-old daughter in a hot car while she went shopping during extreme heat on Saturday.

Court documents revealed that two concerned individuals spotted the young girl locked inside the car with the windows rolled up and the engine turned off at a shopping center near Stapley Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa around 7:45 p.m. The witnesses immediately contacted the authorities for assistance.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found the mother, identified as Nicole Dawn Yazzie, exiting a store and unlocking the car to access the child. The officer noted that the girl was visibly sweating profusely and appeared disoriented, pale, and had urinated on herself. She was dressed in a short-sleeved shirt and long cotton pants.

With the temperature outside reaching 110 degrees, police estimated the interior of the car to be a scorching 129 degrees. The child was provided with water and medical attention at the scene before being placed in an air-conditioned police vehicle.

According to court records, Yazzie admitted to intentionally leaving her daughter in the car because she didn’t want to accompany her into the store. She also confessed to not starting the car as a precaution against the child driving away. Yazzie acknowledged that her actions were wrong.
