Accident – Death – Obituary News :

FORT HUNTER — The body of the man who tragically fell into the Mohawk River near Lock 12 while fishing last week has been recovered, bringing closure to a harrowing search operation. Montgomery County Sheriff Jeffery Smith confirmed the recovery on Tuesday morning.

The man has been identified as Nicolas J. Williams, a 31-year-old resident of Gloversville. His body was found in the river by deputies in the vicinity of where he was last seen.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Mr. Williams’ family during this difficult time. We hope that they can find some comfort in knowing that Nicholas has been found,” Sheriff Smith said in a statement.

Throughout the five-day search operation, the sheriff’s office maintained contact with Williams’ family, providing support and updates. Sheriff Smith reiterated that they will continue to offer assistance to the family and friends of the deceased.

Nicholas Williams fell into the water while fishing near Lock 12 when he leaned down to retrieve his fishing pole, which had slipped from his hands. Despite efforts from an individual at the scene to throw him a life ring provided by the state Canal Corporation, they were unsuccessful. The sheriff had previously highlighted the strong current near the lock, caused by the river and movable dams.

Multiple agencies collaborated in the search operation, including Montgomery County Emergency Management, Fulton County Fire Coordinator and Emergency Management Office, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, state police, state fire, state forest rangers, Tri-County Swift Water Rescue Team, Lake Valley EMS, Montgomery County EMS, Canal Corporation, and fire departments from Fort Hunter, Tribes Hill, Florida, and Amsterdam.

“The coordinated efforts and dedication of all the agencies involved were crucial in the recovery of Mr. Williams. We are grateful for their support and professionalism throughout this search operation,” Sheriff Smith acknowledged.
