New Delhi: A shocking incident occurred in north Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila, where a 17-year-old girl was allegedly molested by an e-rickshaw driver on her way from Kashmere Gate ISBT. The incident took place on June 13, and the police have swiftly taken action by arresting the 27-year-old suspect.
The victim sought medical treatment at a local hospital, where she reported the assault to the authorities. The police promptly recorded her statement and registered a case against the accused.
Challenging Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Manoj Meena revealed that the investigation was particularly challenging due to the lack of a registration plate on the e-rickshaw and the late-night timing of the incident at around 2:30 am. Despite these obstacles, the police team diligently reviewed footage from over 150 CCTV cameras in the area.
After extensive efforts, the driver was identified as Mohammad Istikhar, a resident of north Delhi. The victim mentioned defending herself by hitting the perpetrator on the forehead with a brick, which led to a visible injury. This crucial detail helped the police apprehend Istikhar at Mori Gate on June 15, and the e-rickshaw involved was seized as evidence.
Perpetrator’s Account
According to the perpetrator, the victim had requested to be taken to Wazirabad in Gurgaon. She had arrived at New Delhi station from Varanasi and was directed to find transportation to Gurgaon from Majnu Ka Tila. The assault took place in a secluded area near Jal Board Awaas in Bara Hindu Rao, where Istikhar allegedly molested the girl.
The swift action taken by the police in apprehending the suspect is commendable, and justice must prevail in this distressing case of assault on a young girl.
