Killing of 22-year-old in Fremont remains unsolved, sparking community outrage

FREMONT, Calif. – Community members in Fremont gathered on Monday to demand justice for the tragic killing of 22-year-old Isaiah Castillo, whose death at the intersection of Mowry Avenue and Fremont Boulevard two years ago continues to haunt his family and friends. The incident, believed to be an attempted carjacking, remains unsolved, leaving his loved ones frustrated and desperate for closure.

Isaiah’s mother, Rachel Barrera, expressed her deep pain and disappointment, stating, “It’s two years later, and I just feel like Isaiah’s life meant nothing to everyone else. I still see the image of my son’s body dead in the street.”

Despite four juveniles being identified as suspects in the crime spree that led to Castillo’s death, no arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed by the Alameda County District Attorney. This lack of accountability has only added to the anguish felt by the community, who fear that without justice, more families will suffer at the hands of criminals.

Edward Escobar, representing the Coalition for Community Engagement and Citizens Unite, highlighted the urgent need for change, stating, “The community is saying enough is enough because this victimization of them living in fear and terror, it’s not living. That’s barely surviving.”

Isaiah’s grandmother, Lillian Barrera, issued a stark warning, saying, “People think Fremont’s so nice; this could happen to your family.” The family continues to hold onto hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, but with each passing month, the struggle becomes more challenging.

“No one should have to bury their child, and then to not receive justice is a slap in my face every day,” Rachel Barrera lamented, underscoring the profound impact of the unresolved case on their lives.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has been contacted for an update on the status of the case but has not yet responded. The community remains determined to seek justice for Isaiah Castillo and ensure that his memory is honoured with closure and accountability.
