Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Police in Santa Rosa apprehended a suspected car thief in the early hours of Tuesday morning after he was caught breaking into multiple vehicles, authorities reported.

Law enforcement officers were summoned to the 1000 block of Sonoma Ave. around 12:45 a.m. following a report of an interrupted auto burglary. Residents in the area were awakened by the sound of car doors being opened and closed in front of their home. Upon investigating, they witnessed the suspect rummaging through the interior of one of their vehicles.

Further inspection revealed that a second vehicle belonging to the residents had also been tampered with. Confronting the suspect, the residents saw him drop items that belonged to them before walking away. One of the male residents attempted to follow the individual and witnessed him breaking into another car in the 1300 block of Sonoma Avenue.

Upon the arrival of police officers, the suspect, identified as 33-year-old transient Fernando Penaloza from Santa Rosa, was detained without resistance. Authorities discovered that Penaloza was in possession of methamphetamine and items belonging to one of the victims, including cash, watches, a handheld fan, sunglasses, headphones, a flashlight, a necklace, and rosary beads.

Initial investigations suggested that Penaloza had stolen the aforementioned items from an undetermined number of unlocked vehicles over several hours before being apprehended. Police also suspected that he had attempted to steal at least two vehicles during the spree.

Penaloza, with a history of multiple convictions for burglary from vehicles, was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail on two counts of felony auto burglary, two counts of felony attempted auto theft, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. Santa Rosa residents who believe their vehicles were targeted during the incident are urged to contact the SRPD at 707-543-3600, referencing case number 24-7354, to report any potential thefts and inquire about retrieving stolen property.
