A tragic incident unfolded as young policeman and father Constable Vianney Yembinaro lost his life while on his way to visit his partner and two-week-old baby at the Correctional Services College. The unarmed constable was walking past the Bomana Transit Barracks when he was allegedly attacked by a drunk policeman attached to a police unit in NCD.
Principal Offender in Custody
Deputy Commissioner of Police Specialist Operations Donald Yamasombi confirmed that the main suspect in the attack has turned himself in. Yamasombi stated, “Yes, the principal offender is detained. There were civilians drinking with police personnel at the time of the incident. Until and unless arrests are made according to police investigations, the principal offender has been identified and is detained.”
Shocking Loss for Special Services Division (SSD)
The Special Services Division (SSD) is reeling from the loss of Constable Vianney Yembinaro, a member of the Airborne Tactical Unit who was brutally attacked. The young constable was allegedly bashed with an unknown object and kicked multiple times near the Bomana Transit Barracks.
Constable Yembinaro was accosted by a drunken officer from another police unit, leading to his tragic demise. After the attack, the assailant and his companions reportedly returned to drinking, leaving the injured constable on the ground.
Efforts to Save Constable Yembinaro
Upon hearing the commotion, two other officers rushed to the scene and noticed Constable Yembinaro’s breathing difficulties. They quickly stopped a passing vehicle and transported the injured constable to the Port Moresby General Hospital. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained by Constable Yembinaro proved to be fatal, and he passed away.
Main Suspect Identified and in Custody
The officer identified as the main suspect in the attack hails from Kabwum, Morobe Province. Following the announcement of Constable Yembinaro’s death, the suspect voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities in Port Moresby.
DCP Yamasombi emphasised, “The personnel who were with the late member during that fateful night are known, and I have instructed the ACP Crimes to collaborate with NCD CID to apprehend them.”
