The family of Christopher Case, a man found dead in a field in Weld County 24 years ago, finally has some closure as investigators have recently identified his remains. Case’s body was discovered just east of Greeley in 2000, and his family estimates that he was around 28 years old at the time of his death.
Reacting to the news, Richard Case, Christopher’s brother, expressed his shock and sorrow, stating, “I just don’t know how to describe it anymore. He was family. It just shocked me that it all came down after my mom and dad were both gone.”
The body initially identified as John Doe was found near East Eighth Street and Weld County Road 43 on February 14, 2000. Despite no immediate identification, recent DNA testing revealed the remains to be that of Christopher Case.
Living in Nevada, Richard Case admitted that he hadn’t seen his brother since 1998. He shared that Christopher had struggled with alcoholism, often leading him to be estranged from the family. However, Richard never expected his brother to be missing for this long.
Speculating on the circumstances leading to Christopher’s death, Richard mentioned a possible connection to their grandfather’s funeral. He expressed his fears, stating, “My only fear is we aren’t going to find out what happened exactly.”
Utilizing genetic genealogy testing, investigators were able to solve the long-standing mystery surrounding Christopher Case’s identity. The Weld County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there were no signs of trauma on the body, and the cause of death remained undetermined due to the advanced state of decomposition.
Despite now having his brother’s ashes, Richard Case still seeks closure and answers. He emphasized the importance of understanding the events leading to Christopher’s death, stating, “Even through our rough times, he was family. It’s not right with him not being here.”
While the Weld County Sheriff’s Office is not actively investigating the circumstances of Case’s death at the moment, Richard encourages anyone with information to come forward. As the family continues to grapple with the loss of Christopher, they hope for a resolution to this tragic chapter.
