FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Authorities in Fort Wayne have apprehended a 34-year-old man following accusations of a disturbing sexual assault incident that occurred on Sunday. The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) reports that the suspect, identified as Christopher Applewhite, allegedly sexually assaulted a woman at gunpoint.
The incident was reported at a hotel located in the 1000 block of N Coliseum Blvd. on June 16. Upon responding to the call, officers encountered a man matching the description provided by the victim. As they approached him, the suspect attempted to flee and dropped a loaded pistol in the process.
After a brief pursuit, Christopher Applewhite was taken into custody by law enforcement officers. According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim stated that she had no prior relationship with the assailant. She recounted how Applewhite forcibly entered her room, brandishing a knife and demanding that she undress.
In a harrowing turn of events, the victim tried to defend herself with a firearm, only for the suspect to overpower her and use the weapon against her. The victim reported that Applewhite proceeded to assault her in the bathroom, leaving her bound and traumatized. It was later revealed that the suspect had allegedly consumed methamphetamine prior to the assault.
Shockingly, the victim’s children were present in the hotel room during the assault, adding another layer of horror to the ordeal. Christopher Applewhite now faces a litany of charges, including rape, burglary, armed robbery, and intimidation with a deadly weapon.
Court documents also indicate that Applewhite has a history of criminal convictions, including a previous felony for auto theft and domestic battery. The victim was promptly treated for possible exposure to substances before being escorted to the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center for further care.
