Teen Pleads Guilty and Sentenced in Deadly Benito Juarez High School Shooting

A teenager has entered a guilty plea and received a sentence in connection with the tragic shooting that took place outside Benito Juarez Community Academy in December 2022.

The incident occurred on December 16, 2022, when authorities responded to reports of gunfire near the Pilsen school. The shooting unfolded as students were being dismissed from classes, prompting a chaotic scene as individuals sought shelter within the school premises.

According to the police investigation, four teenagers were shot outside the school. Tragically, two male teenagers, aged 14 and 15, sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Additionally, a 15-year-old boy was injured in the thigh and shoulder, while a 15-year-old girl suffered a graze wound to the thigh.

The victims were identified as 15-year-old Brandon Perez, a student at Juarez, and 14-year-old Nathan Billegas, a freshman at Chicago Bulls College Prep.

The perpetrator, who was 16 at the time of the incident, faced multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and various weapon-related charges. Prosecutors treated the individual as an adult in the legal proceedings.

In a recent court appearance, Christian Acevedo, the convicted teenager, pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. As part of the sentencing, Acevedo received consecutive terms totaling 46 years, with a minimum of 85% to be served for the attempted murder charge.

Since the tragic event, students have organized walkouts to protest against violence, while the families of the victims have criticized Chicago Public Schools for what they perceive as inadequate responses to the shooting aftermath.

School administrators have acknowledged the need to address concerns about gang-related activities in and around the school premises, as they work towards fostering a safer environment for students.

Authorities have yet to ascertain the motive behind the shooting, with ongoing investigations focusing on potential gang affiliations in the case.
