A body recovered from the Nolichucky River on Sunday, June 16th, 2024, has been positively identified as that of a missing man from Greeneville, Brian Key.
The discovery of the body was made off Bright Hope Road, prompting the involvement of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. According to a statement released by the department, Key, aged 36, was reported missing by his family on Saturday after they were unable to contact him.
Following the report of Key’s disappearance, volunteers from the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad, alongside members of the Sheriff’s Department, initiated a search operation along the Nolichucky River, starting upstream from the Poplar Springs boat ramp. Key’s vehicle was later found near the river off River Bend Road in southern Greene County, setting off a more extensive search effort.
Despite the search efforts, Key remained unaccounted for until his body was discovered on Sunday. The body was subsequently transported to the Forensic Center in Johnson City for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The community of Greeneville has been deeply saddened by the tragic outcome of the search for Brian Key, and the Sheriff’s Department has extended its condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
