The Importance of Road Safety for Cyclists and Motorcyclists

The recent road safety campaign in Cheshire, which ran from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 June, highlighted the importance of staying safe on the roads for cyclists and motorcyclists. The operation, in conjunction with the National Police Chief’s Council’s (NPCC) two-wheel operation, aimed to educate road users on road safety and enforce necessary laws.

Supported by the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, the campaign provided officers with the opportunity to educate the public on the importance of looking out for each other and staying safe while on the road. It also allowed for enforcement actions to be taken where needed.

Engaging with Communities

The week kicked off with officers attending Mossley CE Primary School in Congleton to participate in the Cycle to School event. More than 50 schoolchildren were escorted safely to school, with workshops provided to educate them on important aspects of cycling safety. Children received advice on remaining visible, positioning themselves correctly on the road, braking techniques, and bike security measures.

Similar events were held across the county to promote bike safety, maintenance, and motorbike checks, engaging with communities and spreading awareness about road safety.

Highlighting the Consequences

The Think Bike campaign was a poignant reminder of the consequences of careless riding. Bev Abbey, the mother of Harry Abbey, a 19-year-old who tragically lost his life in a bike accident, attended an event in Birchwood to share her story and advocate for safer riding practices.

A close pass operation in Congleton saw officers cycling along identified hot spot areas with body-worn cameras. Any drivers found to have passed too closely were stopped and educated on safe passing distances and the importance of giving space to cyclists and motorcyclists.

Enforcing Road Safety

The week concluded with a focus on motorcyclists on the Cat and Fiddle in Macclesfield, where officers encouraged safe riding practices and enforced laws where necessary. Chief Inspector John Forshaw of the Force’s Roads and Crime Unit emphasized the need for education and enforcement to protect cyclists and motorcyclists on the roads.

“Motorcyclists and cyclists are over-represented in road collision statistics, and it’s crucial that we educate drivers on the vulnerability of two-wheeled road users,” said Chief Inspector Forshaw. “We want all road users to be considerate and mindful of each other’s safety, regardless of their mode of transport.”
