A 41-year-old plastic surgeon in the United States has been taken into custody over the tragic death of his wife, who suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing a procedure on his operating table in November last year. The surgeon, identified as Benjamin Brown, was arrested on Monday and charged with one count of second-degree felony homicide for alleged manslaughter by culpable negligence in the death of his wife, Hillary Ellington Brown. According to The Independent, he surrendered to the authorities after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying that deputies were called to the surgeon’s practice, Restore Plastic Surgery, in Florida, on November 21 for a medical emergency. Upon arrival, they found Hillary Brown in cardiac arrest. She was rushed to a hospital where she was placed on life support before she sadly passed away. An autopsy to determine the cause of her death is currently pending.
“The autopsy procedure typically takes several months as it involves extensive laboratory tests and toxicology screenings, as well as information gathered by our Major Crimes detectives regarding the circumstances of the death,” the police department explained in their statement.
Benjamin Brown is currently being held in the county jail awaiting a bond hearing, as stated by the authorities.
On the day of the incident, Hillary Brown was scheduled to undergo several cosmetic procedures including miniature muscle plication/abdominal scar revision, bilateral arm liposuction, lip injections, and ear adjustments, as reported by The Independent. She had reportedly prepared her own anaesthesia for the surgeries and had ingested a mix of pills, including Valium.
Prior to the surgeries, Hillary began experiencing symptoms related to sedation. During the procedures, her husband, the plastic surgeon, administered additional anaesthesia without verifying the medications she had taken. He failed to record her medication and dosage. Hillary started experiencing blurred vision, restlessness, muscle twitching, and other symptoms of drug toxicity. Despite these warning signs, the surgeon continued with the procedures until his wife became unresponsive and started seizing.
When a medical assistant suggested calling emergency services, the surgeon initially refused. After some time, he eventually instructed the assistant to call 911, but Hillary never regained consciousness. The medical board later deemed the surgeon’s treatment of his wife as “careless and haphazard.”
In May, Florida’s Department of Health issued an emergency order limiting the surgeon’s medical license to only performing procedures in a licensed hospital under the supervision of another licensed physician. The department is currently pursuing disciplinary action against Benjamin Brown. The surgeon has decided to challenge the allegations, and the case will be heard by the Division for Administrative Hearings.
