HASTINGS, N.Y. (TMX) – A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Father’s Day in upstate New York, as a man tragically lost his life while attempting to retrieve his keys from the depths of a local lake. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident took place on Oneida Lake near the pier just south of the Waterfront Tavern in the town of Hastings.

Authorities sprang into action when they received reports of two individuals in distress in the water at approximately 9:51 a.m. on Sunday. Members of the Brewerton Fire Department rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

42-year-old Wattie Cappers, hailing from Syracuse, was successfully rescued by deputies and taken to Upstate Hospital in stable condition. However, the situation took a tragic turn when 44-year-old Anthony Davis of Clay lost his life in the lake.

The harrowing incident unfolded as Davis, Cappers, and another companion were enjoying a Father’s Day fishing trip. Unfortunately, Davis accidentally dropped his keys into the water, prompting him to dive in after them. Despite his best efforts, he found himself unable to make it back to shore.

Witnessing his friend’s plight, Cappers bravely jumped in to rescue Davis. However, the treacherous waters proved too challenging for both men, leading to a tragic outcome. The quick response of nearby deputies who heard their cries for help was instrumental in the rescue operation.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the individuals involved in this devastating event.
