Anthony Davis : Tragic Father’s Day fishing accident: Man drowns in lake retrieving keys

HASTINGS, N.Y. (TMX) – A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Father’s Day in upstate New York as a man tragically lost his life while attempting to retrieve his keys from the depths of Oneida Lake. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call on Sunday morning, alerting them to two individuals in trouble near the pier just south of the Waterfront Tavern in the town of Hastings.

Responding swiftly, the marine patrol and members of the Brewerton Fire Department arrived at the scene to assist. One of the men, identified as 42-year-old Wattie Cappers from Syracuse, was successfully rescued and taken to Upstate Hospital for treatment, where he is currently in stable condition.

Tragically, the second man, 44-year-old Anthony Davis from Clay, was not as fortunate. Despite the efforts of the fire department divers, Davis was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Upstate Hospital.

The sequence of events that led to this heartbreaking outcome began when Davis, Cappers, and another companion were enjoying a Father’s Day fishing excursion. Unfortunately, Davis accidentally dropped his keys into the lake, prompting him to enter the water in an attempt to retrieve them.

Struggling to make it back to shore, Davis found himself in distress, prompting Cappers to heroically jump in after him. Tragically, both men found themselves unable to return to safety, leading to the harrowing situation that unfolded before the deputies arrived.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of Anthony Davis.
