Accident – Death – Obituary News : SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department has released bodycam footage of a fatal shooting that took place in May at a Northwest Side apartment complex. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 19, in the 17000 block of La Cantera Terrace.
According to reports, officers Travis Maxwell and Daniel Garcia were responding to a call regarding smoking marijuana at a swimming pool when they were alerted to a stolen vehicle on the property. Maxwell parked his vehicle behind the unoccupied stolen vehicle to prevent it from leaving, while the officers proceeded to investigate the initial call.
In the bodycam footage, the officers can be seen walking towards a nearby balcony when they notice a man, later identified as 21-year-old Angel Cuevas, approaching and getting into the stolen vehicle. As Cuevas begins to drive the vehicle over the curb and onto the grass towards the officers, both Maxwell and Garcia fire their weapons at the vehicle, eventually striking a nearby utility pole.
Cuevas was struck once and was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, neither the officers nor a woman walking her dog nearby were injured during the incident.
Maxwell and Garcia, who have only eight months of service with the San Antonio Police Department, are currently under investigation for their actions during the shooting.
