Body Camera Footage Shows SAPD Officers Firing at Stolen Vehicle, Fatally Wounding 21-Year-Old Suspect

The San Antonio Police Department has released body camera footage showing officers firing their weapons at a stolen vehicle, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Angel Cuevas. The incident occurred on the evening of May 19 in the 17800 block of La Cantera Terrace on the far northwest side of the city.

Unfolding of Events

According to authorities, SAPD officers were initially dispatched to the area for an unrelated narcotics call. Upon arrival, they spotted an unoccupied vehicle nearby that had been reported stolen in March. As they investigated the stolen vehicle, Cuevas was seen attempting to flee in the car.

In the newly released body camera video, officers can be seen chasing Cuevas as he gets into the stolen vehicle. Cuevas then drives erratically, running over a curb and onto the grass in the direction of the officers and a woman walking her dog.

Use of Force

As Cuevas drives forward, the officers are heard ordering him to exit the vehicle. When he fails to comply, the officers fire their weapons multiple times at the car, which eventually crashes into a light pole. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers discover Cuevas with a gunshot wound to the head.

Response and Investigation

Officers immediately provided lifesaving measures at the scene before Cuevas was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The officers involved in the shooting, Travis Maxwell and Daniel Garcia, both with eight months of service with SAPD, have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation by the district attorney’s office.
