Fort Wayne, Indiana (WPTA) – The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) has announced the arrest of a 28-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on the city’s northeast side early Sunday morning. The incident resulted in one man being found dead and another wounded.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Tyshawn Morris, has been taken into custody on preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder by the FWPD.
According to reports, FWPD officers responded to a residence on Melan Cove around 5 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered two men inside the home with gunshot wounds.
Court documents reveal that the shooting took place during a watch party for a professional fight hosted by the homeowner. Although the homeowner did not witness the altercation, he later informed detectives that he had obtained video footage of the incident from a third party.
The video reportedly shows an argument between Tyshawn Morris and one of the victims, with the homeowner alleging that Morris was the perpetrator of the shooting.
Morris voluntarily presented himself at the police station later that morning to discuss the incident. He claimed that the altercation stemmed from feeling disrespected by one of the victims after a night of drinking and socialising.
According to Morris, he attempted to walk away from the argument but was physically assaulted by the victim, prompting him to draw his weapon and fire multiple shots. Morris stated that he did not intend to kill anyone and was aiming for non-lethal areas.
The shots fired resulted in one man being grazed by a bullet and the death of another victim. The surviving victim recounted attempting to disarm Morris before realising he had been shot and fleeing the scene upon hearing additional gunshots.
The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released by the Allen County Coroner.
