The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a man on outstanding drug trafficking and weapons charges following an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred in May.

On May 11, deputies responded to a call about a man who had accidentally shot himself in the leg. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies noticed a vehicle leaving the driveway. A traffic stop was conducted at the intersection of Biggerstaff and Fairview Church Road, where two women, 23-year-old Makenna Leeanna Ryan and 31-year-old Sarah Margaret Whitten, were found inside the vehicle. Both women are now facing multiple charges, including drug trafficking.

The man involved in the shooting was identified as 29-year-old Terry Dwayne Smith. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injury. During the investigation, deputies observed Smith carrying a black bag into a building on the property. Arrest warrants revealed that on May 11, Smith was found in possession of approximately 234 grams of meth, four grams of fentanyl, and six grams of marijuana.

Smith had outstanding arrest warrants for trafficking in methamphetamine, trafficking in fentanyl, felony possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and simple possession of marijuana. He was arrested and booked into the Oconee County Detention Center on a combined £161,000 surety bond on Friday, June 14.
