Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Richmond man is facing charges of burglary after he was discovered in a home by its owner, sparking a police investigation in mid-May.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Robert Bragg, claimed to police that he was leasing the residence. However, court documents filed in Wayne Superior Court revealed that Bragg has been charged with one count of burglary, classified as a Level 5 felony in relation to the incident.

Police Response to Burglary in Progress

On the evening of May 27, deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call reporting a burglary in progress at a Richmond home. The homeowner had arrived at the property to find two individuals inside – Bragg and a woman. The homeowner detained both individuals until law enforcement arrived at the scene.

During interviews with deputies, the woman claimed she had been in a relationship with Bragg for a few months. Bragg allegedly informed her that he was renting the Richmond house.

Conflicting Statements and Past Criminal History

Confusion arose as both Bragg and the woman provided conflicting statements regarding their presence in the house. Bragg told deputies that he was renting the property from an individual named Michael, denying any knowledge of the homeowner. He admitted to being in a house where he was not authorized to be.

Further investigation revealed that Bragg had a prior arrest related to burglary charges stemming from a September 2023 incident in Richmond. He was formally charged in connection to this case earlier this month.

Discovery of Lease Agreement Discrepancies

Deputies located a lease agreement within the home, as per Bragg’s directions. However, discrepancies were found in the document, including whiteout marks, an incorrect address, and a forged signature. The homeowner denied ever seeing or signing the lease agreement.

During a search of vehicles linked to Bragg and the woman, law enforcement discovered multiple items belonging to the homeowner, including glass elephants, coins, knives, a handgun, vases, and liquor boxes.

Alleged Craigslist Listing and Home Improvements

In a subsequent interview, Bragg claimed that the home was listed on Craigslist as a “handyman special for rent.” He alleged that he had been compensated for home improvements with a reduction in rent. The homeowner clarified that he had not given anyone permission to occupy the residence.

Legal Proceedings and Hearing Date

An initial hearing for Bragg is scheduled for June 25, as per court documents. The investigation into the burglary incident remains ongoing as authorities work to ascertain the true nature of Bragg’s involvement in the case.
