Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured in a tragic shooting incident that resulted in the death of a man and woman in Tampa on Saturday night. The incident occurred after the deputy responded to a distressing 911 call, according to officials.

The call was made by 48-year-old Rebecca Ann Themelis, reporting that her husband, 51-year-old Christos Byron Themelis, had been shot. The situation escalated as more shots were fired while she was still on the phone with the HCSO dispatch center.

Upon arriving at the 14000 block of Cactus Wren Place, deputies encountered the suspect, 19-year-old Christos Alexander Themelis, Jr., and his mother, Rebecca Themelis, outside the home. Bodycam footage captured Deputy Shane McGough urging Rebecca to move away from her son for safety.

During the confrontation, Christos Themelis Jr. shot his mother and then turned his firearm towards the deputies, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Deputy McGough was unfortunately shot in the leg during the altercation.

The suspect retreated into the home and barricaded himself, prompting the deployment of HCSO’s SWAT Team, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, and Crisis Negotiation Team. The standoff ended when Christos Themelis Jr. succumbed to his injuries inside the residence.

Sheriff Chad Chronister commended the deputies for their bravery in handling the chaotic situation. He stated, “The monster we encountered this evening is responsible for not only injuring our deputy but also killing his own mother and father. Our deputies responded to a chaotic scene and immediately put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.”

Deputies Involved in the Incident

  • Deputy Shane McGough, 26, with two years of service
  • Deputy Brandon Schade, 26, with one year of service
  • Deputy Richard Ziegler, 33, with nine years of service
  • Deputy Bjar Atkins, 38, with 13 years of service
  • Deputy Ciara Moncada, 34, with two years of service

None of the deputies had prior incidents involving the use of deadly force, according to authorities. Deputy McGough underwent surgery to remove the bullet from his leg and is expected to recover fully in three months.

Sheriff Chronister provided an update on Deputy McGough’s condition, mentioning that he is in good spirits and surrounded by his family. He urged the community to keep the deputy and his family in their thoughts and prayers during his recovery.

As per HCSO policy, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the shooting incident to ensure transparency and accountability.
